Supported by his team, Overbury service manager Phil White recently tackled a series of challenges to raise money for Portsmouth Down Syndrome Association.
Phil walked 62 miles from Eastbourne to Arundel as part of the South Coast Challenge, abseiled down the Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth, and ran the Surrey half marathon and his second 10-mile Great South Run raising nearly £5,000 for Portsmouth Down Syndrome Association (DSA). The UK-based charity aims to support children with Down Syndrome and is close to Phil’s heart, as his granddaughter Fara was born with Down Syndrome two years ago.
Phil was supported by a number of Overbury colleagues including a team based at Bristol City Hall that was embarking on an 18-month refurbishment. This project formed part of the council’s wider upgrade to the grade-II listed building and the onsite team hosted a number of fundraising events including a bacon roll morning and a raffle, raising a further £2,500.
Phil, 58, from Bookham, Leatherhead in Surrey comments: “Fara’s diagnosis has led me to take part in a series of fundraising events over the past year to raise money for Portsmouth Downs Syndrome Association. I’m extremely grateful to all at Overbury who’ve adopted this cause as one of their chosen charities, and I'm thankful to everyone who sponsored me and helped raise such a significant amount of money. I hope to continue to raise awareness and funds for the charity in 2017.”
Rachael Ross, chair of Portsmouth DSA adds: “Phil’s ongoing support coupled with his sportsmanship and achievements over the past few years have all been outstanding. Not only has he helped to generate awareness for Portsmouth DSA, Phil has also helped to raise an incredible amount of money and as a self-funding charity, support like this is invaluable and means a great deal to us.”
Money raised will go towards improving the lives of children across South Hampshire and beyond, by providing friendship, advice and a range of specialist and progressive educational services from birth, which they might not otherwise receive.
