Finastra is a transformative force in the highly competitive fintech industry. Creating organic solutions which work seamlessly and effortlessly is a top priority for their global teams.
So, having sourced the perfect canal-side office space in central Nottingham, Finastra teamed up with project managers CBRE and appointed Overbury to design and fit out a centre of excellence which reinforces their cultural values of innovation and fluidity.
Embracing the architecture
The double-height ground floor, mezzanine level, curved lines, canal-side influence and roof garden figured prominently in the empty shell that our design team encountered.
Our two key project objectives were: to imprint the fresh Finastra brand and cultural values, and to deliver innovative structural solutions to underpin the ingenious design.
The structural challenge
A distinct personality emerged from the double-height of the space. The design vision was to create cubed project zones, visible from the outside as angular timber-clad features. As they flow deeper away from view, they deftly mirror the building's architectural curves.
Although complex technically, we achieved this through significant physical and structural alterations, adding further cantilevers to those already in place on the first floor.
A rising opportunity
The lack of staircase in the original shell provided a perfect opportunity to create a statement feature.
We connected two suspended curved stairwell lengths together - one projection flowing into the next at a gentle turn. The dramatic stairs lead to the balcony in a sweeping helical arc and connect to nature through a replica birch tree, wrapped in real bark.
To celebrate and nurture the diverse and unique workforce that is the backbone of Finastra, the brief demanded flexible and engaging workspace. The leadership team were keen to ensure that groups would be energised to collaborate and innovate whilst embracing life and agile working.
Tools and Technology
‘Tools’ and ‘Technology’ became the vocabulary which fed our design principles: the flexible spaces we created were the tools underpinning the use of technology to optimise productivity.
We ensured the healthy mix of work settings suit a spectrum of styles and backgrounds, gently facilitating the removal of barriers. ‘Ideation Zones’ weave throughout the design, encouraging spontaneous exchanges. The 60 sit/stand desks allow for agile working when combined with lockers. A prayer room and showers support the team’s wellbeing.
Dynamic and versatile
Circular booths, socially inclusive and open-plan project zones stimulate group dynamics, fostering connections, creativity and innovation
A tiered “bleacher” seating zone provides a curved, organic setting for social interaction, doubling as a presentation zone. The boardroom flexes from a single space to two or three rooms, or can be completely opened up to become part of the wider office.
State-of-the-art technology blazes through the design trail, ensuring the team has the maximum opportunity to connect, disrupt, innovate and deploy their expertise uninterrupted, on a global scale.
Flowing cubes and silk leaves
The contemporary brand colours strengthen the look and feel of the interior. Hot pink is graded through the colour wheel to purple ensuring the visual brand is both fully imprinted on the space and represented by innovative materials.
The wellbeing of the Finastra team and visitors was an important acknowledgement within the design, providing deep connections to nature through the use of warm, organic materials. A full-sized birch tree with real bark ascends in place of the helical stairwell's column, topped by silk leaves.
How we did it
In partnership with CBRE, we worked from scratch to design a complete fit-out including all new installations: mechanical and electrical services; data; lift; helical staircase; projecting project zones; partitions; ceilings; flooring; acoustic treatments; joinery; WCs and showers; all internal and roof garden furnishings.
