Four projects, 18 months and a whole new era for Britain’s favourite broadcaster, our recent fit outs for ITV in London are the perfect example of what can be achieved when working in collaboration.
Together our refurbishments in four different buildings - 200 Gray’s Inn Road, Westworks (White City Place), 1 Waterhouse Square and 2 Waterhouse Square - cover almost three football pitches!
Broadcasting a new era
ITV’s long-term refurbishment programme will modernise its working practices and culture. Our team was appointed to build high-spec spaces which support activity based working and employee wellbeing, all whilst providing a tech-savvy environment needed in the broadcasting world.
The refurbishment box set
The scope of work in each refurbishment provided employees with a variety of spaces; it also ensured ITV is utilising each office to its greatest potential.
The offices now provide a mix of open plan and cellular offices, along with specialist facilities and joinery installations. Tea points, lounges, kitchen areas, meeting suites, presentation rooms and breakout spaces are complemented by all new data infrastructure, mechanical and electrical services, AV, IT, lighting, partitions, ceilings, flooring and furniture.
Fit out with a twist
Given the nature of ITV’s work, its working environment has some pretty unique aspects. Ensuring proper acoustics was an important part of each fit out, especially in the Westworks building at White City Place where broadcasts are filmed. To meet the high acoustic requirements we used a ‘box-in-box’ construction method.
This acoustic isolation technique keeps out distracting and unwanted noise to create an atmosphere of near complete silence, ideal for recording. We essentially constructed a soundproof room within a room with isolated inner walls, floors and ceilings. Even the air-conditioning units couldn’t be fixed in the usual way; we hung them on anti-vibration hangers from the main building structure so they don’t touch the room at all.
From a design perspective, these offices are bang on trend. Their contemporary design by MCM Architecture highlights an industrial look with exposed services and ceilings. ITV wanted CAT A fit outs using as many CAT B features as possible. Turning dusty, functional overhead services into an aesthetic feature isn’t an easy job. Replacing dated pipes and joints, tidying up ductwork and a coat of paint has turned otherwise underrated services into a talking point of the design.
Good joinery is almost a lost craft. It can make the world of difference in an office fit out project, especially when it’s done beautifully. Each ITV refurbishment had bespoke joinery installed and over 100 TV monitors were fixed at different heights on specialist units. Not many offices can match that!
It’s a cliché but it’s true: team, together everyone achieves more. Part of our brief was early handover of certain specialist areas, especially those with specific technical or technological requirements.
Daily communication with key stakeholders and ITV’s specialist contractors made for a smooth transition between different phases of the fit out. Wherever possible, on each project, early access was given to ITV’s IT team so they could complete their IT installation before move-in day.
