Clearly, turning an old listed building into offices is going to take longer than fitting out 10,000 sq ft of new office space. Addressing our impact on the environment plays an important part in how Overbury operates. We fully understand that through the activities we undertake on behalf of our clients, we inadvertently have an impact on the environment, and therefore we have a responsibility to ensure we mitigate these impacts. Effectively managing environmental risk on each site is paramount to the overall successful delivery of the project, and we feel that our track record speaks for itself.
For Overbury though, what is incredibly important is to ensure that we play our part in supporting our clients in achieving their environmental and sustainability aspirations. BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Methodology), first published by the Building Research Establishment (BRE) in 1990, is the world's longest established method of assessing, rating, and certifying the sustainability of buildings against each other and the rest of the industry.
BREEAM tracks the performance of construction projects against nine environmental and sustainability issues. Consequently a certificate and rating is awarded from Pass to Outstanding. Our PwC project at One Embankment Place holds the highest ever BREEAM Outstanding rating (96.31%) for an office fit-out in the UK.
In 2014 the BRE released the BREEAM Refurbishment and Fit-out 2014 scheme which has been designed to specifically assess the environmental and sustainable performance of fit-out and refurbishment projects.
Operated by RICS, SKA Rating is an environmental assessment tool specifically designed and created to assess the sustainable performance of fit-out projects. Project teams interested in fitting out spaces in an environmentally sustainable way can use the SKA Rating method to:
- Carry out an informal self- assessment of the environmental performance of their fit-out
- Commission a quality-assured assessment and certificate of the environmental and sustainable credentials of the project from a RICS-accredited SKA assessor
- Obtain clear guidance on environmental and sustainable good practice measures in fit-outs and how to implement them
- Benchmark the environmental and sustainable performance of fit-outs against each other and the rest of the industry.
LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is an American environmental standard and rating system for the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of green buildings, homes, and neighborhoods. Many multinational and US based companies that we work with aim for a high LEED rating.
