Project description

With a clear desire for the development of a modern but unique multi-purpose space, the focus of the Citadel project was sustainability. At the forefront of this was the installation of LED lighting, electric car charging stations and cycle storage spaces.

Collaborating locally

Overbury worked collaboratively with Architecture 00 to ensure local craftspeople and sustainably sourced materials were used throughout the renovation. The aim was to ensure Citadel’s carbon footprint remained (and continues to remain) low whilst contributing to Birmingham’s local economy.

Stealing the show

The atrium landing was extended and transformed into office space to increase lettable areas of the building and add to rental potential. Surrounded by dramatic bleacher seating, the atrium acts as a focus for the community gathering in the building.

State-of-the-art technology and exposed services provide users with a future-ready and aesthetically-pleasing environment in which to not only work, but also engage with the local community thanks to Citadel’s cultural, wellness and impact programmes regularly hosted. Such events include fitness classes, food pop-ups, supper clubs, art exhibitions and regular partnerships with local charities.

A logistical commonwealth

The city centre location was challenged by the ongoing Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022 preparations and development, so logistics were carefully managed to avoid clashes and minimise disruption.
