Key features

  • Diversity and inclusion
  • Sustainability and circular economy
  • Growth
  • Placemaking

Arup had outgrown their Leeds office and needed a solution that accommodated their continuing growth and supported their environmental and inclusivity goals. The brief highlighted the importance of diversity, the circular economy and placemaking in their new office at 11 & 12 Wellington Place, Leeds.

Neurodiversity exemplified

It was important that the project catered to the diverse needs of Arup’s workforce. The project team consulted with staff and stakeholders to understand what was important for them, and why. From this, we were able to deliver a workplace that met everyone's needs and enabled a sense of ownership across the business. With inclusivity a clear focus, we delivered a range of design elements from hyper and hypo spaces to quiet rooms, quiet desks and dimmable lighting. A multifaith room allows for private contemplation. These areas offer Arup's people a respite from the bustling office environment, promoting relaxation and focus. Collaborative and activity-based settings were also included to encourage teamwork and creativity.

Collaborative specialisms

We worked in close collaboration with Arup’s teams of specialists, including lighting, acoustics and structural engineers. The design and installation of the statement timber staircase was no exception. Repurposing the previous concrete slab that was removed during the construction process to form the base for the staircase delivered a stunning and sustainable solution to link the two floors. This not only provided a striking focal point but also ensured that no material went to waste, aligning perfectly with Arup’s sustainability goals.

Sustainable furnishings

Arup's project featured extensive reuse of materials throughout. 60% of the existing furniture was reused and integrated into the new design, an approach that not only minimised waste but also provided a cost-effective solution without compromising on quality or aesthetics. Where we did source new products, we focused on ensuring quality and longevity as well as considering the environmental credentials.

Benchmark for sustainable office design

Arup were delighted with the result, expressing how the dynamic and low-carbon workspace, encourages collaboration and innovation. The meticulous attention to detail and collaborative effort throughout the project ensured that the final design met and exceeded Arup's expectations. This new workplace environment has provided Arup with a futureproof and flexible solution that has successfully housed 500 of Arup's people.
