Rejuvenating an outdated space into a leading renewable energy research facility

We helped deliver a state of the art research facility for Queen Mary University of London, transforming an outdated computer lab into a high spec, flexible space dedicated to green energy research. This logistically complex project was completed within budget and on schedule, whilst working in a live university environment with adjacent operational labs.

Mark Griffin, Queen Mary University London

Queen Mary set out to create an innovative facility to support advancements in renewable energy technologies. This involved the complete strip out and refurbishment of an outdated computer lab to transform it into a modern and functional research environment.

A carefully planned solution

Given that the work was carried out in a live university environment, it was essential to ensure minimal disruption to adjacent laboratories while staying within strict budgetary constraints. To meet Queen Mary’s requirements, we developed a structured delivery approach that ensured seamless project delivery without impacting the university’s ongoing research activities. The construction areas were carefully segregated to ensure that adjacent laboratories could remain fully operational, with 24/7 access maintained throughout the project.

In the new research space, six fume cupboards and specialist lab benching were installed, as well as upgraded partitions, ceilings and floor finishes. A dedicated HVAC system, secondary glazing and new electrical and lighting services were introduced to create the ideal research setting. We also value engineered elements like doors, window blinds and ventilation ductwork, which not only improved quality but also reduced procurement time.

As the project progressed, an additional laboratory was added to the scope. Through close coordination and proactive planning, this change was successfully managed without affecting the agreed timeline or budget.

Sustainability was a priority throughout the project, with a 99% recycling rate achieved, reinforcing Queen Mary’s commitment to environmentally responsible practices. Away from site, the project team also contributed to the local community by volunteering at Tower Hamlets Gardens, supporting the university’s broader social value initiatives.

World class research facility

The completed facility successfully delivered on Queen Mary’s vision for a modern, high performance space dedicated to green energy research. Through careful planning, strategic cost management and a commitment to minimising disruption, Overbury provided a research environment that enhances Queen Mary’s position as a leader in renewable energy innovation.
