Morgan Sindall Group awarded Armed Forces Covenant Gold accreditation

Overbury, alongside the Morgan Sindall Group companies, has been awarded the Armed Forces Covenant Gold accreditation in the UK’s Defence Employer Recognition Scheme. It’s the highest honour for organisations that support the armed forces community.

The award recognises the collective contributions of the Morgan Sindall Group companies in their ongoing commitment to supporting current or veteran members of the armed forces, reservists, service families and the wider military community across all its businesses.

To achieve Gold status, the Group has collectively demonstrated leadership across several areas from flexible leave for reservists, to career transition support for current personnel or veterans and active promotion of the Armed Forces Covenant.

“We’re incredibly proud to have received the Gold Award,” said Gemma Warren, Head of HR at Overbury. “Veterans bring exceptional discipline, leadership and resilience. Their skills have strengthened our teams and this award reflects the inclusive culture that is integral to all the Morgan Sindall Group companies.”

To support reservists, armed forces families and cadet force volunteers working for the Group, we have introduced specific policies and guidance that cover the unique requirements of this community, including up to 10 days’ additional leave for reservists who are required to undertake training exercises or are deployed.

Michael Alker from frontline to fit out leadership

After joining the Queen’s Lancashire Regiment at 17 and serving in both the regular army and reserves, Michael Alker has spent the last decade building his career at Overbury.

“Overbury’s culture is unique. It is built on respect, investment in people and genuine care. It's part of what motivated me to reconnect with my military roots and rejoin the reserves.”

Michael is now a Senior Project Manager leading a £20 million project. He credits the discipline and dedication from his military service and the company’s continued support for his success.

“When I was deployed to help train Ukrainians, Overbury made sure my family and I were supported throughout. That level of care made me feel valued not just as an employee but like a family member.”

His message to other service leavers: “If you’re looking for a company that genuinely cares and helps you grow, this is the place.”

Andrew Malpass on bringing military precision to award winning projects

A former Commando Sniper in the Royal Marines, Andrew Malpass has been with Overbury for almost six years. Today he is a Project Manager delivering complex commercial fit outs, bringing the same focus, resilience and adaptability honed in military life.

“As a sniper, attention to detail and strategic thinking were essential. The same goes for construction. Planning, communication and high standards are everything.”

Andrew’s military background has given him the mindset to thrive. His standout moment was delivering Project Arden for Cambridge University Press & Assessment — a high profile fit out now recognised with multiple national awards.

“Your military training gives you a strong foundation. Do not underestimate it. The industry values teamwork and leadership. There is also a great network of veterans in construction who will support you.”

Andrew’s advice: “Be open to learning the technical side but know that your discipline and problem solving skills will set you apart.”
